The ruins are located on Chojnik Hill (627 m above sea level), above the Sobieszów district of Jelenia Góra. Chojnik Castle was built in the 14th century by Bolko II, a prince from the Piast dynasty of Świdnica-Jawor, as part of the fortification system along the duchy's borders.

The building's subsequent owners were the Schaffgotsch family, who expanded it in the Renaissance style. Since the great fire of 1675, when the family moved to the palace in Sobieszów, the castle has remained a permanent ruin, currently open to the public.

Two trails lead to the castle, suitable for both hikers and cyclists. While climbing, cyclists can explore the so-called Smugglers' Cave, located along the trail. The red trail leads to the castle via a paved road and is easily accessible by families with children. The black trail is intended for more advanced hikers due to sections requiring rock climbing. Regardless of the trail you choose, you'll reach the castle in about 30 minutes. Dogs are welcome on a leash in Karkonosze National Park, as well as in the castle ruins.
